OSPREY DAY 2006
Volunteers, local businesses, and nonprofits install an
osprey nesting platform at HCT's
A. Janet DeFulvio Wildlife Sanctuary Boardwalk

Thanks to generous contributions from local businesses, nonprofits, AmeriCorps and HCT volunteers an osprey nesting platform can be viewed from the wheelchair accessible boardwalk at HCT's nearly 12-acre A. Janet DeFulvio Wildlife Sanctuary overlooking the Herring River marsh. Hopefully, everyone can soon watch nesting ospreys with 5-foot wingspans building their nest amidst windswept marsh.

Installing the 25-foot tall osprey platform in the middle of the marsh on a cold, windy, raw Saturday in March was a true team effort. The project was funded by a $1,200 grant from the county-sponsored Green Grant Youth Council, a group of teen students who review and select environmental grant proposals. Whether donated time, materials, food or labor, HCT thanks all who helped including HCT volunteers, Doug Walker of Harwich Pet Supply, Cape Cod Docks, Mid-Cape Home Centers, Colin Leonard Enterprises (Colin is an HCT Trustee), Cape Cod Bird Club, Birdwatcher's General Store, AmeriCorps volunteers, Soule Land Surveying, George's Pizza, Harwich Port House of Pizza, and BZ's Mexican Pizzeria. The photos below tell the story (osprey credit: Elliott Carr; group: Stephanie Foster of the Harwich Oracle).

Follow the wheelchair accessible boardwalk through the peaceful woods of the A. Janet DeFulvio Wildlife Sanctuary.

The boardwalk offers a viewing deck and a bench, both with a wide open vista of salt marsh stretched along the Herring River.

Call or email for HCT's free color trail guide which provides maps showing easy access to both the boardwalk and the walking trails of the Coy's Brook Woodlands.
