Historic Land Preservation Project

Join the effort to preserve a part of history

History is alive all around us and there are certain areas we need preserve. Special places keep us in touch with who were are and where we come from. The historic Captain Kendrick land with its national maritime significance is one of those places.

The 40+ acres of the overgrown farm is the birthplace of American explorer John Kendrick who led the first U.S. expedition around Cape Horn in 1788. Kendrick opened the gateway to the Pacific for American whalers and merchants, and a dozen years before Lewis and Clark set out, he owned more than 1,000 square miles of land on what would become Vancouver Island. During a seven-year odyssey in the Pacific, Kendrick worked to keep Hawaii, and the American Northwest from falling under British and Spanish control. In addition to its historical significance, the Kendrick homestead land is also an archeological priority site, state-designated critical wildlife habitat, and a drinking water and ground water protection zone. Amid the loss of many historic sites to development, we have a unique opportunity to preserve the Kendrick land.

The current landowners could be willing to discuss a sale of the property and if this happens, then we will need public support to enable a purchase. Join us to save a piece of history by adding your name to the list of people who would like to be contacted if a purchase agreement can be reached with the current owners of Captain Kendrick's 40+ acre landscape within the Pleasant Bay Watershed.

Please email your contact information (include name, mailing address & phone) to HCT Executive Director Mike Lach: hct@cape.com.

Thank you for your interest in what could be a rare opportunity to save a landscape connected to Captain Kendrick's historic odyssey.
